ABOUT JEMS & BACK AROUND
JEMS, LA Based Indie Folk Trio made up of Jessica Rotter, Emily Colombier & Sarah Margaret Huff, are set to release their second album. After their first self-titled album pushed them forward with playlist & radio success, they gained notable attention in the LA music scene, selling out Hotel Cafe’s main stage, playing The Troubadour, The Ford, KCRW Summer Nights, (the late) Bootleg Theatre, as well as headlining The Moroccan, Gold Diggers, and Canyon Club. They have showcased songs from this new record in the documentary series “Music Diaries” (produced by Spectrum One), performed on NPR/World Cafe Live, and toured with She & Him in the summer of 2022.
JEMS is looking for partnerships and collaborators to help push the music forward!
JEMS’ sophomore album, “Back Around,” is an expansive landscape of enchanting harmonies, adventurous instrumentals, poignant themes, and compelling storytelling. The opening track, “I Was,” begins beyond Earth’s atmosphere and floats down to our world with a cry of creation and a plea for protection. By the second track, “Get to Know Ya,” the album is ready to build from an intimate place. JEMS touches on themes of joy and escape in “Gotta Get Away,” finding inner strength despite disappointment in “The Weather,” and sardonic romantic expectation in “Smoking Gun.” This is followed by “Bury It,” a reflection on being true to oneself and the consequence of repressing pain and ignoring inner truth, told in 3 different narratives. The album steadily climbs a mountain of betrayal with “We Don’t Pray” and chants off a proverbial cliff with the climactic and haunting, “The Hawk.” The final two tracks are quintessential JEMS. Suspended in air with plush harmonies beginning with the piercing melancholy of “Erased,” they resolve in comfort with one of their most timeless tracks to date, “Back Around” - a meditation and deep knowing that when everything around us is not always okay, we will be okay, and we will have each other.
Key players on the album include Adam Tressler (Aimee Mann, Kacey Musgraves), Adam Christgau (Angel Olsen, Lucius, Tegan & Sara), Francisco Ojeda (The Strike, She & Him), engineer Jesse String (Leonard Cohen, Prince, Nick Jonas), and mixed/mastered by Daniel Goodwin (Kevin Morby, Bob Weir).
